Blog: Holidays, Lockdown and Grimes

Amelie, one of our Vice Captains for 2021/2022, welcomed everyone back to Term 4, with her unique take on life, lockdown and holidays (and Grimes’ outfit at the Met Gala). Read on!

I’m not going to keep you long, because to be honest, it’s hard enough to come up with an original and engaging Welcome Back speech under regular conditions, but given that we are returning to School online, I have found this task quite daunting.

For most of us, this holiday period has meant different things. While some restrictions have lessened, and we’ve been given more freedom, I was just looking forward to going back to school because, in the end, it would give me something to do. I don’t live near the beach or near many of my friends, so for me, being isolated has been hard and quite boring.

As someone who could very happily hide in my room until the end of time, lockdown seems like the perfect opportunity to do just that. But, as I have learned, this is not exactly the best thing for me in the long run, so I’ve tried to branch out in any way I can, while still following restrictions.

While I could go on about how rough lockdown is or conversely, pretend that’s it’s been all sunshine and good times, I feel like the truth is somewhere in the middle.

For most of us, we’ve been spending more time with our families, which is great because I feel like out of lockdown, we all have very busy schedules and don’t get to see each other during the week. However, being stuck in a confined space with people who know exactly how to push your buttons can be more than challenging. As I always say, sisterhood is a unique combination of undying love and extremely specialised psychological torture!

There has continued to be many a conversation about the outfits worn on the red carpet at the Met Gala 2021. I still stand by the fact that Grimes was the best dressed, something that my friends and sister have bullied me endlessly for. This was only exacerbated when Grimes was spotted by the paparazzi in an outfit that Ally (Year 11) claimed looked like “a cockroach”. I must say, I agree. I do love Grimes, but sometimes she does make it hard for me to defend her.

In a desperate attempt to fix my hair in the first week of the holidays, I tried a frankly suspicious gradual lightening treatment that my grandma gave me. This should have been the first red flag. Much to my mum’s amusement and my horror, my worst nightmare had come true. My hair was slightly crispy and a violent shade of yellow! An event that truly traumatised me and while fixable, with a whole lot of purple shampoo, one I never want to experience again.

So, when people ask you what you’ve been doing in the holidays, I encourage you to think about it and share something, no matter how dull or peculiar, instead of reverting back to the well-worn line: “Nothing, we’re in lockdown!” If there’s one thing I know about 韩国AV, there is not a dull person in this School. I know that there was more to your holidays than isolation.

I am asking you to keep up your motivation and faith in yourself during these, hopefully, last days of online School. Not only to complete your work, but your motivation to look after yourself and your friends. I ask you to look to the future, carrying yourself with grace in this time and I look forward to seeing you back on campus very soon.

Thank you and have a great Term 4!
