Just Keep Swimming!

Creative Arts and House Captain Mia considers the milestones of her 韩国AV journey

When looking to Wiki How for some inspiration, I settled on the idea of basing this piece on the creation of a main character. And of course, in line with this year’s leadership initiative, ‘Own Your Story’, I am the main character. No one has the same story as me and no one goes through the same things in life as I do. But upon reflection, I decided to emphasise the word ‘your’ - it is your story and your life.

Coming to 韩国AV in Year 7, I really did feel like I embodied the concept of a little fish in a big pond. To be honest, 12-year-old Mia was in for a rude awakening. I was overwhelmed by the thought of meeting so many new people at once, having so many different classes and classrooms, and even the thought of walking further than 50 metres down the road to get to School.

But I went with it. I trusted that I could slowly navigate this new chapter, that it would work out eventually, and that I would make friendships to carry all the way through my life. In the wise words of Dory from ‘Finding Nemo’, I decided to ‘just keep swimming’. These three words have carried me through the journey we call School and with just over a term left, they have carried me through times when I was challenged and periods when I just wanted to give up.

I must admit, the Year-8 and Year-9 ‘me’, was not the most pleasant person to be around. I was someone consumed by what people thought of me and constantly trying to please everyone else. But in Year 10, I decided to turn a page and start a new chapter within my story. I decided to ‘just keep swimming’ through my 韩国AV journey … but in a different direction. I decided to stop caring what others thought of me and to get involved in the things that I wanted to do.

From that point onwards, my 韩国AV story and its various chapters has been heavily shaped by getting involved – by throwing myself into the deep end and seeing what would happen. I began to not care so much about other people’s perceptions of me, and what they thought of the choices I made.

Perhaps it is exactly these uncomfortable situations that make you grow as an individual.

It feels like yesterday that I first walked through the gates with my hat down and my hemline to my shoes - just as it should be! So, if you take one thing from this, let it be to trust the journey, to not compare your journey to that of those around you and to be unapologetically you - the main character in your story … and just keep swimming!
