When I was in Year 7, still exploring the Senior School, my parents signed me up for Snowsports. At this point, I loved to free ski and while it was, and still is, my passion, I had never competitively raced. My only experience was racing my older brothers down the mountain – I only vaguely understood the different disciplines.
I am telling you this to convey that finding your passion is not always easy without a little help or a nudge from others. For me, it was my mum who signed me up for interschool Snowsports. I often wonder, if she had not given me that nudge, would I have found my passion in ski racing? Taking on board the recommendations of friends and family regarding co-curricular activities can be the impetus you need to discover your true passion and put your “hand in”.
I still find it hard sometimes to generate the confidence to put my “hand in” and try something new, so I try to surround myself with people I believe can support me. These people have helped me find new hobbies and passions, and to be the best version of myself.
So, that is my best advice – find people who will inspire you to put your “hand in”, and who will be there to support you. Even if you don’t end up enjoying their recommendations, at least you will have tried something new and won’t have any regrets. Just make sure you acknowledge them for giving you that nudge.
