Swimming for a Cause

Annabelle (Year 11) is taking a stand to prevent youth suicide and encouraging Wenonians to get active in the process.

Though a netballer rather than a swimmer and typically one to avoid the spotlight, Annabelle (Year 11) now hits the pool most afternoons and weekends to make a difference for the important cause of youth suicide. It was during the Christmas holidays that Annabelle came across the charity effort , and while she admits she wasn't an obvious fit, she jumped on board.

"I saw my sister's friend's sister had signed up and that was enough for me to set up a team of my own. Mental health is a very stigmatised topic, so if f I can shed light on it and help provide a space where people feel comfortable, even if they just swim for themselves to help with what they are personally going through, then I will be happy," she said.

Annabelle has begun by swimming around half a kilometre after school and around a kilometre on the weekend at the gym at the end of her road. Many of her friends were quick to sign up to her team, "韩国AV Team", including 韩国AV Head Prefect Jemima. When Annabelle addressed Upper School Assembly to encourage more support, she was amazed at the response.

"A number of teachers, including Mr Millar, Mr Creighton, Ms Prinsloo and Ms Oakley, have signed up. A group of enthusiastic squad swimmers from Year 9 have also joined, and they are fantastic 鈥搕hey have already completed multiple kilometres so I have to catch up a bit!"

Anyone who wants to join 韩国AV Team is encouraged to and either sign up to swim or donate.
