Culinary Excursion
韩国AV’s inaugural Food Technology excursion was a mouth-watering affair to prepare Year 12 students for their final exams.
On Wednesday 7 June, with our Food Technology teacher Ms Vanessa Stewart, we embarked on a fun adventure to Homebush Cakes. Aligned with the Food Manufacture area of study, it also supported curriculum topics such as the Australian food industry and Food product development.
On arrival, we were welcomed with stylish hairnets and the chance to see how a large array of cakes, pies, scones, and other baked goods are manufactured, according to food safety standards and in line with the seven Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACC) Principles.
The business employs 50 full-time staff and caters to many different dietary requirements and allergies, while supplying hospitals, bakery chains, catering firms, and large airline companies.
Its most popular item is the chocolate lava pudding, of which they sell around two million per year. A highlight of our visit was witnessing the product development of their new custard tarts, which were very delicious.
Overall, we gained valuable insight into the various stages involved in creating, developing, and testing products on a large scale, as well as the use of commercial equipment for efficient packaging and distribution. We feel grateful to have received such an eye-opening and rewarding excursion.
