Barbie Inspirations

Deputy Head Prefect, Dariia, shared her poignant life lessons drawn from an unexpected source – a recent viewing of the Barbie movie. She highlighted the transformative power of choices, the courage to face fears, and the importance of defining our own paths.

Each week, our student leaders share their insights with their peers in Assembly.

As I walked out of the Barbie movie last Saturday night, tears glistening in my eyes, I couldn't help but reflect on the powerful message it conveyed. The movie introduced us to Barbie Land, a place where Barbies and Kens live, and in this captivating world, women rule free from the shackles of societal expectations. It is a sanctuary where they can authentically be whoever they desire to be, embracing their true selves without limitations, and it truly struck a chord within me.

Barbie dolls, the very inspiration behind the Barbie movie, made their debut in the 1950s, to embody the aspirations and desires of young girls, empowering them with the freedom to forge their own paths. Back then, women were confined to traditional roles as homemakers, often feeling pressured to marry early and conform to societal norms. However, the progress we have made since then is truly remarkable. Today, women have the privilege of deciding their own destinies – whether to lead nations as presidents or nurture families as stay-at-home mums. We live in a time when choices abound, and it is our responsibility to embrace them and make the most of this incredible gift.

Every day, we make countless decisions that shape who we become – from the way we treat others to how we spend our time. Embrace this power of choice, and actively decide the role you want to play in your life. Don’t let the swirl of life engulf you but take control and steer towards your aspirations. Choose who you want to be today, so tomorrow you can take the actions needed to become that person.

Yet, sometimes it's not the lack of choices that holds us back but rather fear. I can relate to this feeling all too well. Just last term, I found myself sitting on my bed, paralysed by doubt, contemplating whether I should submit my leadership application. Worries about not being voted for any role and the fear of embarrassing myself during my speech in front of the whole school poisoned my mind. But, I refused to succumb to fear! Despite my doubts, I decided to put my hands in. And, look at me now – a living example that taking a risk can lead to success!

We may not live in a perfect Barbie Land, where every day is sunshine and rainbows, and you may not be a Barbie, who “has a great day every day”, but that shouldn't stop us from striving for our own version of a "perfect life”. Make your choice, set your goals, and take action every day, discarding doubts like unwanted baggage.

Embrace the power of choice, the strength to face our fears, and the courage to define our own paths. Together, we can create a life that resonates with our deepest desires and aspirations, and shape a future where our dreams become reality. But remember, even if you stumble and fall, it's okay, because you will always be "Kenough" for me.
