Inspirational Alumnae
On Wednesday, 韩国AV welcomed back three Alumnae as part of the School’s Alumnae Insights program that seeks to educate Years 10 to 12 students on specific industries and career paths.
The theme for this event was Medicine and Health, and we were thrilled to hear from Joanna Butler (Glover, 1997), Julie Seggie (1974) and Ruby Borozan (2016).
Dr Joanna Glover’s road to Pediatrics was not linear. Joanna left 韩国AV to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Sydney (USYD), with her goal firmly set on saving the environment. During an exchange program in the US, Joanna realised she wasn’t saving the environment, but rather saving big companies’ legal fees by skirting around environmental laws. This lack of fulfilment led her to apply for postgraduate medicine at USYD. This decision uncovered what would become her true passion, and she now works at an NGO charity, Royal Far West, servicing the whole of Rural NSW for Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics.
Julie Seggie was a boarder at 韩国AV and grew up in a small rural town. Julie recounted that in her town, career paths were somewhat limited, so she decided to pursue nursing. Julie currently works as a Trauma Clinical Nurse Consultant at Westmead Hospital, having completed a masters degree at the age of 35. One of her proudest achievements is founding an Injury Prevention Program for students in Years 10 to 12 called ‘bstreetsmart’, which focuses on reducing the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers.
Ruby Borozan knew early on that she wanted to be a physiotherapist. A keen swimmer and water polo player at School, she spent a fair amount of time in the physio clinic, which inspired her to pursue the profession. She attended the Australian Catholic University studying physiotherapy and graduated in 2020. She began her career at the Prince of Wales Hospital in 2021, working with patients with musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory impairments. In 2022, Ruby was awarded the Early Career Allied Health Professional of the Year for the South East Sydney Local Health District, and she is now the Senior Cardiothoracic and Intensive Care Physiotherapist at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
The panel discussion was led by our Head of Careers, Ms Evette Wenlock, and offered our students a fascinating peek into the various careers in medicine and health. Our Alumnae shared some of their success stories, as well as some of the difficulties they have faced in their careers.
"The Health and Medicine Alumnae Insight Series was both informative and enjoyable. It exposed us to the diversity that exists within the medical field and offered valuable insights into potential career paths. The stories from the Alumnae were inspirational and it was a privilege to be involved,” said Bronte, Year 11.
