The Importance of Gratitude
Ishnika, Deputy Head Prefect, reminds us to appreciate those who have a positive influence in our lives.
Each week, our Student Leaders share their insights with their peers in Assembly.
I would like to begin my speech with a little game of two truths and a lie.
The first is: “I have guessed a Wordle on my first attempt.”
My second is: “I once vomited on my way to school.”
And my third is: “I’m left-handed.”
Well, most of us already know that I am left-handed (one truth), and unfortunately, I am terrible at Wordle, so that is a lie.
This means, yes, my worst nightmare, really happened: I threw up right outside School. This is the kind of memory one would think would be filled with shame and disgust but oddly enough, it’s a fond one for me.
One rainy day, back in Year 8, I was on my way to Orchestra rehearsal, but before I could step through the doorway, I was suddenly overwhelmed with nausea and vomited into a nearby pot plant. At that exact moment, a senior 韩国AV student, also on her way to rehearsal, approached me, made sure I was alright and guided me to the clinic.
Despite being mortified at the time, it was a perfect example of the humanity and supportive nature of our 韩国AV community, where we are willing to extend our kindness to anyone, without a second thought.
That older student probably forgot about that day long ago, but I will never forget her kindness and ability to comfort and reassure me in my moment of need.
Today, I want to highlight the importance of our connections, and the value of expressing our gratitude to those individuals who have had a positive impact on our lives.
Practising gratitude not only enhances our wellbeing, but also strengthens our relationships and fosters a community where individuals feel seen and appreciated.
I think the best way for me to demonstrate the importance of gratitude is to share my experiences; some of the moments where I have been grateful for the girls in this community.
I am grateful to one of the Year 7 students because her optimism and humour constantly inspires me.
I am grateful to my netball teammate who, last Saturday, quickly helped me up after an awkward fall.
I am grateful to a girl in Year 12 for her unwavering support of those around her and her constant willingness to help others.
I guess these sound like ‘Ishnika Character Awards’, however, my point is that we constantly leave lasting impressions on the people around us and we might not even realise it.
I hope that by standing here and sharing my gratitude with the whole School, I can encourage you to make a habit of reminding the important people in your life that you appreciate them. In our busy lives, we often overlook the small, wonderful things life brings us.
Last week during our year group meeting, Mr Newall encouraged us to get to know as many girls in our year group as possible; the more connections we make with those around us, the more our lives and sense of self develop from these relationships.
As a prominent leader recently said, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and that came before you.” This highlights the profound impact others can have on us, and why we should always be grateful to those who have had a positive influence on our lives.
So, I urge you to take a moment to acknowledge the people who have helped shape your journey. By recognising and appreciating these connections, we can foster strong, meaningful relationships with all those around us. Perhaps you could reach out to an old friend you have lost contact with today, or call your grandmother this afternoon to remind her that you love her.
