Exploring Aboriginal art

Woodstock and Year Three students had a culturally enriching opportunity to develop their understanding of Aboriginal Culture and Art this week with a visit from Wukun Wanambi. Wukun is a Yolgnu man from East Arnhem Land, who is well known throughout the world for his artwork. The girls listened to a presentation on producing a pole artwork based upon the movement of fish within the oceans and people across the land. Wukun demonstrated painting techniques demonstrating on skin using natural white ochre with handmade brushes. This firsthand experience was a valuable part of our History topic where we are exploring Community and Remembrance. Many of the girls demonstrated their curiosity and wonder through their questions about how he makes his artworks and where he gets his ideas. Wakun Wanambi’s work is highly regarded throughout the world and it was fascinating to hear about his country and his career as an artist.
