Journalist and author of Young Adult fiction Gabrielle Tozer spoke to Years 7 to 12 about her novels The Intern and Faking It during the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week.

She spoke to the girls about how her real life experiences in journalism gave her ideas to write her first novel; and explored how an author visit to her school by John Marsden, the author of the Tomorrow: When the War Began series, inspired her to be a writer.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week runs during August each year, and this year’s theme, Australia: Story Country, was threaded throughout the school. Junior School students learned about Indigenous storytelling through dance with the Jannawi Dance Clan, and performed the story of the native honey bee.

Woodstock girls dressed as their favourite character from an Australian book for their Book Parade and Magical Reading afternoon. There were lots of characters from much-loved favourites by May Gibbs, Mem Fox and Alison Lester.
