Eight solar and battery-run model cars built by 14 girls in Years 7-10, took part in the Solar Sprint Challenge, part of the University of New South Wales’ open day last weekend. The cars had to be able to run at least 20 metres on a track, powered by either battery or solar power- the mode selected by a three-way switch.

Cars were tested on the solar option on the day and Sonia and Nusha of Year 10 entered the rally sprint and made it to the second round.

All had a great time learning about electronic circuitry and photo-voltaic cells for solar power - including optimal angle placement to maximise the sun’s power -  and on-the-spot problem solving.
